The tricolor British Union flag of red, white and blue celebrates its 400th anniversary on April 12th. The history of the British flag can be traced back to as early as the year 1606.In 1603, both England and Scotland had a king in common. He was known as James I of England and James VI of Scotland. The flag which was introduced on April 12th, 1606 was a combination of the St.George's Cross of England and the St. Andrew's Cross of Scotland. It differs from the flag of today in that it does not have the red saltire (known as the St. Patrick's Cross). In 1801, when Ireland became a part of Great Britain, forming the United Kingdom, the red saltire and white base St. Patrick's Cross of Ireland was emerged into the British flag, thus becoming the British Union flag that we see today.纯手工翻译
